Taco Bell Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

August 10, 2010

A salmonella outbreak that sickened at least 155 people in 21 states has been linked to Taco Bell restaurants. Health officials have not yet linked the outbreak to a particular item or ingredient at Taco Bell.

The outbreak involves to different salmonella serotypes: Hartford and Baildon. The reported illnesses peaked in June 2010 and resulted in numerous hospitalizations. Of the 155 people sickened by these two strains of salmonella, 80 people tested positive for Salmonella Hartford and 80 people were positive for Salmonella Baildon.

This is not the first time that Taco Bell has been implicated in contaminated food outbreaks. In 2000, customers were affected by a hepatitis outbreak in green onions. An E. coli outbreak in 2006 sickened many customers.
