Cordes Junction, Arizona—Brynne Smith, age 25 of Scottsdale, and a yet unidentified male friend were killed Saturday when the helicopter in which they were riding crashed near the town of Cordes Junction.  The helicopter reportedly was returning to the Valley from Sedona when the crash occurred at mid-day.

Witnesses report that the aircraft was making strange noises before it dove nose-first into the ground and exploded.

The 1974 Bell UH-IV was privately owned and registered to an address in Cave Creek.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, and is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

We wish to express our condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Smith and those of her companion over this tragic loss for them.
