Rene Martinez and Marcos Sanchez Killed by Drunk Driver
Glendale, Arizona—Rene Martinez, age 19, and Marcos Alfonso Valdez Sanchez, age 18, were killed early Monday morning when the Honda in which they were riding was rear-ended by a car whose driver reportedly had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit.
Police say Edgar T. Valenzuela, age 26, was speeding north on 35th Avenue near Dunlap Avenue on Monday at 2:00 a.m. when the crash occurred. Accident investigators report that a witness estimates Valenzuela’s car reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Both teenagers died at the scene. Valenzuela and his passenger, his 26-year-old cousin, were slightly injured in the crash.
The arresting officer noted Valenzuela’s bloodshot eyes, staggered walking, the smell of alcohol and his frequent repetition of statements. Valenzuela faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of endangerment.
We extend our condolences to the families and friends of Ms. Martinez and Mr. Sanchez over this tragic loss.
