Peter Rankin Killed in Bicycle Accident
Glendale, Arizona—Peter Rankin, age 60, was struck and killed by a Navajo Nation police officer as he rode his bicycle along Glendale Avenue early Friday morning. The Glendale Police Department received a call at about 12:13 a.m. reporting a red SUV driving erratically and striking curbs while traveling eastbound on Glendale Avenue from 75th Avenue.
The call indicated the red SUV had side-swiped another SUV that was traveling in the same direction. No one was injured in that vehicle. The driver of the errant SUV, identified as Kevin Hevel, age 30 of Jeddito, Arizona, did not stop. As Hevel approached 59th Avenue, he swerved across all lanes of Glendale Avenue and struck Peter Rankin who was bicycling in the opposite direction. Mr. Rankin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Still, Mr. Hevel continued, running a red light and stopping only after striking a marked patrol car. The officer driving and a passenger civilian observer were injured. Mr. Hevel was transported to a Glendale hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries. A DUI test resulted in his arrest. He was booked and detained on charges of manslaughter, felony endangerment, driving while impaired and failure to stay at the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Mr. Hevel has been a patrol officer with the Navajo Nation Police Department assigned to the Window Rock District since November 2007. He was in the Valley attending police-related training in Paradise Valley.
Detectives with the Vehicular Crime Unit of the Glendale Police Department are heading the investigation.
We extend our condolences to Mr. Ranking’s family and friends over this tragic loss, which is made worse by the reckless behavior of another.
