Peoria, Arizona—Steven Gessner, age 14 and a first-year student at Peoria High School, was struck by a van on his way to class Friday morning.  He was in the crosswalk in front of his school and the crosswalk lights were flashing.

The driver of a northbound van did not see him but remained at the scene following the collision.  Steven was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.  Later that evening, fans held a moment of silence during the football game between Peoria and Cactus high schools.

Peoria Police closed 83rd Avenue between Cactus Road and Grand Avenue for several hours.

We extend our condolences to the Gessner family and friends at this time of great loss for them.
