Gilbert, Arizona—Clara Bergen, age 7, was killed and Kayla Eherlico, age 14, was seriously injured when a rope swing next to a backyard swimming pool broke and knocked both girls into the pool. The swing reportedly was built of heavy wood material and appeared to be rotting at the base.
A physician who was present in the home at the time of the tragic accident dove into the pool, pulled Clara from it and performed CPR. Unfortunately, paramedics who arrived on the scene were unable to revive her.
Kayla was transported to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where she was treated for head injuries and a broken clavicle.
This tragic accident illustrates the importance of adhering to pool safety rules including installation and maintenance of equipment such as diving boards, swings and other accessories.
We extend our condolences to the Bergen family at this time of great loss for them. We wish Kayla a speedy and complete recovery from her injuries.
