Cassandra Hatch of Gilbert Killed in Utah Train Accident
Mona, Utah—A train slammed into a small passenger vehicle carrying three people near the town of Mona, Utah on Saturday evening at about 5:00 p.m. The car was eastbound on Burraston Road at the intersection with the Union Pacific railroad track when it was struck by the northbound train.
The car’s driver has been identified as Jacob Michael Cottle, age 22 of La Plata, Maryland. Cassandra Brielle Hatch, age 22 of Gilbert, Arizona, was the front seat passenger. The back seat passenger, Tanner Ryan Davies, age 22 of Spanish Fork, Utah, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The others were transported to Utah Valley Medical Center where Ms. Hatch later died and Mr. Cottle remains in critical condition. All three were students at Brigham Young University.
There are no known independent witnesses to provide additional information about the events leading up the crash. Authorities have not released information regarding its investigation. The accident is being investigated jointly by the Juab County Sheriff’s Office, Union Pacific Railroad police and the Utah Highway Patrol.
