Phoenix, Arizona—Eric Garces, just 3 years old, died two days after being seriously injured in a car accident on Saturday.

Eric was one of three children and three adults riding in a Nissan when the accident occurred at about 7:15 P.M.

Edgar Martinez, age 19, was speeding north on 31st Avenue near Acoma Drive.  Inexplicably, his Acura crossed the centerline and collided head-on into the Nissan carrying Eric and the others.  Investigators reportedly suspect Martinez may have been under the influence of drugs.

Also injured in the crash were the other children, ages 5 and 11, the Nissan’s driver and Martinez’ passenger.

Martinez was arrested and booked into jail on four counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangerment.  Charges could be upgraded to manslaughter, according to Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos.

We extend our condolences to Eric’s family and friends at this time of tragic loss for them.

We wish those who were injured speedy and complete recoveries.
