Lake Havasu City, Arizona—An 18-month-old girl is in extremely critical condition in a Phoenix hospital after the boat in which she was a passenger capsized Saturday afternoon.  According to Mohave County Sheriff accident investigators, the boat encountered rough waters and high winds just before it capsized north of Pittsburgh Point on Lake Havasu.

Emergency rescue personnel arrived almost immediately, and a volunteer boating officer pulled the child from the water.  She was wearing a flotation device.  The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, then later air-evacuated to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

None of the other 11 passengers on the boat was injured.  Accident investigators have not released the names of any of the victims as their investigation continues.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the tragic accident.

Jose Ortega, of El Centro, California, was the boat’s operator.

We wish the young girl a speedy and complete recovery.
