Martha Hilts Struck and Killed While Jogging on Sidewalk

Ahwatukee, Arizona—Martha Hilts, age 36, was out for an early morning run on Thursday in her Ahwatukee neighborhood near Lakewood Parkway and Amberwood Drive when she was struck by a driver believed to be impaired.  Witnesses to the accident saw a car drive up on the sidewalk before striking Ms. Hilts.  The driver has been identified as Shannon Scott, age 25.

Ms. Hilts was transported from the scene in extremely critical condition.  She later died at the hospital.  Ms. Hilts’ husband, Chris, told ABC News that he went in search of his wife when she had not returned home by 7:00 a.m.  The couple has two children, a boy and a girl.

Phoenix Police Department accident investigators report that Ms. Scott showed signs of impairment.  Police arrested her on charges of manslaughter.

The two women lived in the same neighborhood about a mile apart from one another. 

We extend our condolences to Ms. Hilts’ family and friends over this tragic loss.
