Phoenix, Arizona—A pedestrian was hit and killed near 35th Avenue and Northern Avenue as he attempted to cross the street.

According to accident investigators with the Phoenix Police Department, Sam Veazey, age 58, was crossing the street near the 3600 block of Northern Avenue at around 9:00 p.m. when the driver of a Pontiac Montana van struck him. Mr. Veazey was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, who police have not yet identified, told police he did not see Mr. Veazey crossing the street. Police determined he was impaired and he was arrested for DUI. Neither the driver nor his 25-year-old female passenger were injured. The crash investigation remains ongoing.

We offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Veazey's family and friends for this tragic loss, made worse by the reckless actions of another.
