One Person Dies in Six Vehicle Crash in West Phoenix
Phoenix, Arizona—A fiery crash at the intersection of 59th Avenue and Thomas Road left one person dead and traffic snarled for more than ten hours early Thursday morning. Accident investigators speculate that a tow truck heading north on 59th Avenue ran a red light, striking a Mitsubishi SUV and setting off a chain reaction involving 6 vehicles. The Mitsubishi exploded and burst into flames. Intense heat from the fire prevented witnesses from rendering aid to the driver. The driver died at the scene.
Four others were taken to a local hospital.
One of the vehicles involved, a green pick-up truck, was carrying a large quantity of paint equipment. Though the dazed driver was conscious, it appeared a screwdriver or some other instrument had impaled his head.
Everyone involved was tested for alcohol and drugs. The vehicular crimes unit continues to investigate the accident.
Amidst the chaos, Angel Munos, age 41, was arrested, jailed and charged with attempting to steal tools that were thrown from one of the vehicles and scattered across the roadway. He had crossed the crime tape line.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the man who died, and we wish the injured speedy and complete recoveries.
