Kenneth Collins, Dariana Serrano and Baby Killed in Car Accident, Three Firefighters Injured
Phoenix, Arizona—Three people are dead and three more hospitalized after a Phoenix Fire Department engine and a pickup truck collided near 29th Avenue and Bethany Home Road on Sunday morning.
Phoenix Police Department accident investigators report that the fire engine was traveling westbound on Bethany Home Road with lights and sirens en-route to a structure fire. Although police are still investigating, preliminary indications are the pickup may have turned left onto 29th Avenue into the path of the fire truck. The fire engine rolled several times before coming to rest in a school yard.
The driver of the pickup, Kenneth Collins, age 20, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Accompanying Mr. Collins were Dariana Serrano, age 19, and Kenneth Collins, Jr., age 4 months. They both were transported to a nearby hospital where they later succumbed to their injures.
Three firefighters were transported to the hospital. Investigators said they had kicked out the windshield of their engine and crawled through it to safety. Though injured and fading in and out of consciousness, the firefighters seemed to instinctively know the people in the pickup were severely injured and rendered aid. As of Monday afternoon, two firefighters had been released from the hospital, while the third remains for observation.
We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims over this tragic loss and we wish swift and full recoveries for the firefighters.
