Phoenix, Arizona—Jerry Smith, age 36, was hit and killed as he attempted to cross a street near Arizona State University's West campus in Phoenix last night.

According to accident investigators, Mr. Smith was walking near 51st Avenue and Sweetwater Avenue around 9:25 p.m. when he was hit. He initially was crossing 51st Avenue eastbound in the crosswalk, but left the crosswalk as the traffic signal for traffic on 51st Avenue changed from red to green. Mr. Smith was walking north when a Chevy Silverado pickup truck hit him in the curb lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not believe that impairment or speed were factors in the accident.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Smith over this tragic loss.
