Phoenix, Arizona—A car accident at 35th Avenue and Bell Road this morning has claimed the lives of Jonathan Marroquin, age 18, as well as an unborn baby.

According to witnesses, the deadly accident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. when the driver of a Ford Mustang turned in front of a Dodge vehicle at the intersection. The impact propelled the Dodge sedan onto the sidewalk, where it hit multiple pedestrians who had just exited a city bus at a bus stop.

Mr. Marroquin was one of the pedestrians who was struck. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. A pregnant 15-year-old sustained serious injuries, and her unborn child died. An 18-year-old woman suffered injuries and received treatment at a local hospital, but is expected to fully recovery. Additionally, there were other pedestrians who were struck and sustained injuries but elected not to be transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Mr. Marroquin is being described as a hero for diving onto the 15-year-old to shield her from the impact.

Accident investigators with the Phoenix Police Department continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

We offer our condolences to the families of Mr. Marroquin and the unborn child. We wish speedy and complete recoveries to those who were injured.
