Phoenix, Arizona—A quick trip to the corner store turned deadly after a 17-year-old pedestrian was struck by a hit-and-run driver Saturday night.

Nester Lopez, age 17, was crossing 43rd Avenue near Indian School Road when he was hit by a Lincoln Town Car allegedly driven by L.C. Jones III, age 29.  Phoenix Police Department accident investigators report that Jones was traveling south on 43rd Avenue in the center turn lane at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.

Rather than stopping, Jones proceeded south on 43rd Avenue where he caused another fatal accident less than a mile down the road.  Police arrested Jones on Monday.

Maribel Dominguez, Nester’s mother, said her son stepped out to pick up some ice cream and chips.  He would have turned 18 next month.

We extend our condolences to Nester’s family and friends over this tragic loss, which is made worse by the irresponsible recklessness of another.
