Tread Separation
In August 2000, Firestone recalled more than six million tires following reports of an unusually high number of tread separations on some of its models. These failures resulted in many serious collisions and rollover accidents.
To date, about 50 million tires of various brands have been recalled due to safety defects, including the risk of tread separations.
Detreading may be the result of the use of poor components in the manufacturing process, improper assembly, aging and other effects.
