Williams, Arizona—Aaron Anderson of Williams was killed early Wednesday morning when his Chevy van was crushed between two semi-trucks on eastbound Interstate 40.
Rangers with the Kaibab National Forest have been conducting prescribed burns in the area. Residual smoke from Tuesday’s burn settled along the interstate overnight. Cooler ground temperatures created an inversion which prevented smoke from dissipating. Visibility was greatly reduced.
Lifeline Paramedic Josh Richie said, “I had to get out of the ambulance and walk ahead because you really couldn’t see where you were driving.” One ambulance drove past the accident scene while they were looking for it.
Smoke caused five other less serious accidents. The road between Flagstaff and Williams, a distance of about 35 miles, was closed for five hours, which forced drivers to take an 80-mile detour.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Anderson over this tragic loss.
