Anthony Zangara Killed in Head-On Collision With Police Cruiser

Tucson, Arizona—Anthony Zangara was killed on Thursday when his Scion crossed the center line of South Camino Loma Alta and collided head-on with a Sahuarita police cruiser.

The accident occurred just before 6:30 A.M. near East Old Spanish Trail just outside Vail, which is southeast of Tucson.  Pima County Sheriff’s Department accident investigators report that Mr. Zangara, who is in his 70’s, was southbound on South Camino Loma Alta while the police cruiser was northbound.

Mr. Zangara and Lieutenant Matthew McGlone were both transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.  Mr. Zangara died later that evening.  Lt. McGlone remains hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The police investigation continues, as the cause of the accident remains unknown.
