Tucson, Arizona—A hit-and-run accident on Oracle Road on Monday morning resulted in the death of an as-yet unidentified man. The pedestrian was walking south in an outside lane near the intersection of Oracle and Las Lomitas Roads around 12:45 a.m. when he was struck, first by a pickup truck and then by a van. Neither vehicle stopped to render aid. Tragically, the pedestrian died at the scene.
Similar accidents are not uncommon in this dimly-lit neighborhood. Non-continuous sidewalks that abruptly end present problems for pedestrians, especially those with mobility challenges.
According to a report by the Arizona Department of Transportation, there is a two-mile stretch of Oracle Road between Roller Coaster and Ina Roads that has been the site of nearly 20 accidents involving a bicycle or pedestrian between the years 2007 and 2012.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. A driver must always remain at the scene of an accident in which he or she is involved.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the man who died so tragically.
