Tucson, Arizona—A head-on crash involving six vehicles claimed the lives of four people on I-10 northwest of Tucson on Friday.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety issued an alert about a reckless driver at about 12:15 p.m. Minutes later, a pickup driven by David Gonzales, age 44 of Tucson, crossed the median and collided head-on with an SUV driven by Richard Davis, age 58 of Riverside, California. Mr. Davis was accompanied by his wife, Lynn, age 60, and her sister, Ellen Bennett, age 57 of Tucson. All occupants in both vehicles died.
A semi slammed into the wreckage of the original collision, which triggered a chain reaction. A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office transport vehicle occupied by two deputies and a prisoner also was involved. The deputies had just picked up the inmate from a federal corrections facility in Tucson and were transporting him to the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix. All three were transported to Banner University Medical Center in Tucson for treatment of their injuries.
The accident investigation continues.
We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this tragic crash.
