Mesa, Arizona—Kenneth Wayne Shelley died as the result of injuries he received last Friday when a car turned left in front of him as he was riding his motorcycle north on Dobson Road near Southern Avenue. The driver, identified as Anrisa Sukion, age 43, parked her vehicle and fled.
Mr. Shelley’s injuries included a broken neck, fractures in his thigh, pelvis and arm. His left leg was so severely damaged doctors were required to amputate it. He later died.
Police accident investigators reportedly found pay stubs with Ms. Sukion’s name in her abandoned vehicle. Police located Sukion at her Mesa home later that day. She was arrested. She reportedly told police investigators that the motorcycle was approaching faster than it appeared to be.
Though she arrived from Guam only five months ago, investigators report that she knew she was supposed to stop, and knew she was supposed to have a driver license. She is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Shelley over this tragic loss.
Update
As confirmed by court documents filed on January 6, 2020 in Maricopa County Superior Court, Anrisa Sukion pled guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The plea agreement offered by prosecutors includes a six-month jail sentence followed by probation. She also will be required to pay restitution to Kenneth Shelley's family in an amount not to exceed $50,000.
