Marana, Arizona—A vehicle traveling eastbound on I-10 crossed the median into oncoming traffic and struck two vehicles at about noon on Saturday. A passenger in the first car that was struck, Lawrence Sofaly, age 74 of Hondo, Texas, died of his injuries. The driver who caused the accident as well as the driver of the car carrying Mr. Sofaly were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries.
Westbound traffic came to a standstill. The Arizona Department of Public Safety considers impairment a possible factor contributing to the accident. The Vehicular Crimes Unit has assumed responsibility for the case and now calls this a homicide investigation.
Because the accident scene covered a wide area with considerable debris, the entire roadway was designated a crime scene, and was closed for nearly nine hours.
DPS cut out a section of the right-of-way fence to relieve some of the traffic congestion.
The investigation continues. No information regarding the current medical conditions of those injured presently is available. The occupants of the third vehicle were not injured.
We extend our condolences to Mr. Sofaly’s family and friends over this tragic loss. We wish swift and full recoveries for those who were injured.
